LA

When the town was named in 1781, “angeles” in Spanish roughly translated to “sitting in traffic.”

Abbot Kinney Boulevard

We head to this iconic street in Venice for Salt & Straw ice cream or to shop occasionally.

Academy Museum

Marie’s been a member here from day one, and we visited the week the museum opened.

Baldwin Hills Overlook

This short hike has a rewarding LA view, an iconic (optional) staircase, and a cool little nature museum.

Downtown Culver City

Up the street from our place, you’ll find The Culver Hotel, Sony Studios, and lots of good restaurants.

Griffith Observatory

Park on Fern Dell Drive and hike up to the observatory (free admission), where you can view the Hollywood Sign.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

See if you can spot the star of Patrick’s great aunt, Joan Caulfield, in the area of 1500 Vine St.

Huntington Gardens

We celebrated our first wedding anniversary wandering through these beautiful gardens and museums.

La Brea Tar Pits

It’s free to visit Hancock Park and see the tar pits. The Academy Museum and LACMA are right next door.

Natural History Museum

One of our first dates was to this museum. The California Science Center is next door and also great.

Santa Monica Beach

Stroll the Santa Monica Pier, watch the surfers, or grab a lobster roll or fish and chips at The Albright.

Playa Del Rey Beach

Our “home beach” is quiet and parking is easy (use the residential streets east of Vista Del Mar).

Largo at the Coronet

This is one of our favorite places to see a comedian, musician, or other performance artist.

If you’re looking for things to do around Los Angeles, here are some of our favorite places.

Disneyland

We ran a 5K around Disneyland before we even started dating, then went back later as a couple.

Catalina Island

If you’re staying a little longer, ride the ferry to the town of Avalon on charming Catalina Island. We did.

Beach Bike Ride

We like riding the Ballona Creek Bike Path down to Playa Del Rey Beach. Rent a bike and give it a try.

The Getty Villa

We’ve enjoyed exploring this re-created Italian villa, which is also a museum.

Petersen Automotive Museum

Across from the Academy Museum, the PAM is still on our list to visit, but we’ve heard good things.

Warner Bros. Studio

Another fun studio tour. On our visit, they led us through a soundstage set up for a cop show.

Universal Studios

We once had year-long passes to Universal, which is both a studio tour and an amusement park.

Sony Pictures Studio

Up the street from us, Sony offers a fun studio tour. We once got to attend an advance screening here.
